Interview with Managing Director of Handy Rentals, Cameron MacEachen


Today we’re interviewing the managing director of Handy Rentals, Cameron MacEachen about his role. As an accomplished fleet and operations professional, Cameron brings a wealth of experience to the team.

Handy Rentals is a company focused on providing customers with affordable, safe and high quality truck and van rentals. Handy has grown from moving vehicle rentals to commercial short term and long term rentals and leases, and more! 

So let’s chat with Cameron about everything he’s achieved to get to this point, and what he believes is so special about Handy Rentals.

Handy Rentals has been doing well for decades now, how did the business start? 

My ex-business partner Chris Brown started the business in 1989 when he noticed a gap in the market for commercial vehicle rentals.

What led you to join the team at Handy, and when did you come on board? 

I’ve been involved in the vehicle rental industry since 2003 in Scotland, Australia and New Zealand. During this time I have held senior management, operations, fleet and consulting roles.

I’m experienced in business development and managing and motivating teams, so when the role came up with Handy Rentals it seemed like a great opportunity. I’ve been with the company since 2015.

How do you think your experience has helped Handy Rentals get to this point?

I have been very fortunate to work for great managers over the years which empowered me to be driven and achieve our group targets. I have worked with great teams during growth phases which fast tracked my development and enabled us to achieve our goals.  

I have a strong belief in always putting people first and that has helped us grow our brand to where we are today.

 

Where are you from originally? Share a bit about your background.

I was raised in Oban on the West Coast of Scotland and studied in Glasgow. Studying in Glasgow contributed to my sense of humour and the glass is always half full mentality. This enables me to appreciate any dry day we get and not get too upset about the Wellington wind!

 

How long have you lived in New Zealand?

I moved to New Zealand in 2005 for a year travelling and never left. I am married with a young son and daughter and proud to call Wellington my home. 

 

How would you describe a typical Handy customer, and what do you offer them?

Our customers are homeowners, renters or companies that need to move stuff with minimal fuss. We provide them with straightforward temporary fleet solutions.

 

What do you think is special about what you do at Handy? 

We genuinely care and want to make the experience as painless and easy as possible for our customers. We want to be known as the best in our industry for customer experience and ease of doing business. Basically, everything we do is for the people we serve.

 

What do you enjoy helping customers with the most?

People may not know exactly what they need and are unsure about what size vehicle they need or what the total cost will be. We resolve this by being transparent and providing all the relevant details on our website or over the phone to ensure the customer gets the right vehicle for the job at the right price, every time.

 

What is your favourite part about working at Handy?

I love that we look after our customers and help them find solutions to their moving needs with minimal fuss. I love the feedback we get from customers and the faith they put in us time and time again.

 

Finally, do you have any exciting plans for the future of Handy? 

Like all businesses, we are constantly evolving and looking at what else we can offer and do differently. We have recently introduced reusable moving crates and commercial vehicle sales due to requests from customers.  

We will be adding longer term options for businesses this year as an alternative to long term leasing and vehicle ownership as well as a fleet management advisory service.
