Handy Reusable Moving Crates
Handy Crates are plastic moving boxes that offer a sustainable alternative to cardboard boxes. Made of durable recycled plastic, these stackable boxes are designed to make moves easier and more efficient. When you’re ready to move, rent our crates and load them into your moving truck or van. Our team will then collect them from your next location.
Reusable Moving Boxes vs Cardboard Boxes
Deciding between cardboard boxes and reusable plastic moving boxes for a local move? Compare the two to see which suits you best.
Reusable Moving Boxes Pros and Cons
Pros
- More manageable
Moving crates often come with comfortable handles that make them easy to carry, load and unload.
- Durable
More sturdy, and less vulnerable to water leaks and deterioration ensuring your items stay protected during the move.
- Stackable
The ability to safely stack the boxes saves space during transport and easier to move around a trolley.
- No assembly required
Unlike cardboard boxes, plastic moving boxes don’t need assembly, saving you precious time and effort when packing.
- Reusable
Can be reused multiple times, reducing waste and environmental impact compared to single-use cardboard boxes which lose their effectiveness after each use.
Cons
- Sizing Restrictions
Crates are often available in one (larger) size, if you have limited space you may still want to include smaller cardboard boxes in your packing. - Heavier
Due to their ability to hold more, plastic boxes can become too heavy. It’s important to make sure you don’t exceed the weight limits and use a dolly. - Space Considerations
They don’t fold flat so they can take up slightly more space than disassembled cardboard boxes. - Buying Costs More
If you’re planning on buying, you’ll spend more on reusable boxes than cheaper cardboard alternatives. Fortunately, you can save money by renting. - Pre-Planning
Arranging pickup and collection can require a little more thought than collecting cardboard boxes from your local hardware store. Though many people find this convenience a huge plus!
Reusable Moving Boxes Pros and Cons
Pros
- Easily Available
Cardboard boxes can generally be brought directly from hardware stores or moving and transportation companies. - Cheaper
Budget cardboard boxes are often a cheaper short term option, and sometimes can even be found for free. However, the durability of pre-used boxes is not guaranteed! - Lightweight
Multiple sizing options. Smaller sizes can make them more manageable to carry in the hands. - Custom
Because you own the boxes, you can choose when and how to dispose of them. Plus you can write all over them if you wish. - Easy to Store
Cardboard boxes are foldable and easy to store flat. They don’t take up much room and can be stored out of the way like under the bed or in a cupboard.
Cons
- Flimsy
Cardboard moving boxes are made out of lighter materials which are a lot less durable than sturdy plastic and more susceptible to water damage. - Harder To Handle
While still a good option, cardboard can be difficult to handle, with no easy grab handles like the plastic crates. - Assembly Required
Cardboard boxes must be assembled, taped and then taped again. If not done right, this can lead to items falling out the bottom. - Harder To Stack
While you can still stack cardboard boxes, you have to worry about placing the heavy ones on the bottom and the lighter ones on the top. - Single-Use
Cardboard boxes are limited to one or two uses before the cardboard weakens and becomes too fragile. They can become easier to crush if a heavier box is stacked on top.
Ultimately, it comes down to your specific needs and preferences. While some prioritise the durability and quality of moving crates, others like the simplicity and budget-friendliness of the old faithful cardboard box.
Top Packing Tips For Your Box Rental
Here are our top tips for getting the most out of your moving crates:
- Start Early – Start packing earlier than you think. Experience tells us that this part almost always takes longer than you think it will. Begin by packing away items that you don’t use often. Finish up by packing the items you use daily such as kitchen items and clothing.
- Pack Smart – Don’t overfill boxes or crates as this can lead to cracks and breakages. Overfilled moving boxes can make them unstable and cause them to tip over. Stick to the weight limits so they stack properly, and are comfortable to move.
- Care For Fragile Items – Give fragile items such as glassware, mirrors and photo frames extra padding. Wrap each item in paper or bubble wrap, and ensure they are completely wrapped. Surround the items in the box with towels or blankets.
- Pack Heavy Items Strategically – Pack your heavier items near the bottom of the box and lighter items at the top. Use soft materials like packing paper, bubble wrap or clothing to fill any gaps. This reduces their movement and offers better protection.
- Ensure Plastic Boxes Are Shut Properly – The benefit of plastic moving boxes is that the items inside can stay dry. Just make sure you close the crates and secure them shut with ties.
- Book The Right Time – We suggest booking your box rental a few weeks before the move so you’ve got plenty of time to pack and unpack when you reach your destination. You can always call us if you need to extend the time.
- Don’t Overstack – Our moving crates are very durable and can be stacked up to 3 high. Be mindful not to overstack or they could topple during transport.
- Always Add Labels! – Write down where each box needs to go and give each box a number. Use a contents sheet to write a short description of the contents of each box numbered. This saves time and confusion when you unload them at your final destination.
- Use Eco-Packing Materials – Instead of using bubble wrap or bought packing paper, have a look around at what you might already have. Old newspapers, blankets, towels or cushions can add extra padding, saving you money while cutting down on single-use packing materials.
Plastic Box Hire – The Greener Moving Option
Cardboard boxes need to be replaced after one or two uses. With hard-wearing plastic, crates can be used over and over again for years which helps to prevent waste. At Handy Crates, we only use recyclable plastics for our moving boxes. This makes them a greener option for a cleaner environment.
